Short Summary
Our friend Rita Papageorgiou, mother of two children, is an active and sensitised fellow citizen, who at46 already counts six operations performed in London, the first one aged 13.
The incurable disease she suffers from, diffuse giant Hemolymphangioma – extensive venous malformation of the face and neck, belongs to the rare diseases (rare congenital disease, with severe deterioration after an accident at the age of 4) and wasnever treated in Greece due to lack of technical resources and skilled personnel tillpresent (Confirmed in findings of various committees and Hospital Directors) (attached) .
In 1990 her health was assessed by the relevant committees and the disability rate from her condition was ruled to be over 67 % and was reassessed in 2008 at 85 % (attached); regardless, and with severe daily pain (and 6 surgeries) she continued her life with great difficulties, driven by solidarity and assistance towards all directions .
Now she is called upon again, due to severe deterioration of the disease, as a medical emergency again, to besubmitted initially to 3 new scheduled surgeries with a 6 week gap between each and continuous monitoring for further surgery and/or treatment .
The 7th consecutivesurgery and 1st of those to follow, is scheduled for 1.14.2014 at Charing Cross Hospital in London , and has already been evaluated as a medical emergency due to obstruction of the airwaypassages .
If all goes well with the operation on January 14, 2014, Rita is forced to remain in London for an initial period of at least 3 months for continuous monitoring, recovery and planning of further surgery.
Which makes it impossible to calculate the amount of time she needs to be there for health reasons.
After this time and for the next 12 months, the multidisciplinary team of vascular anomaly medical experts who monitor and operate on her will necessarily have to monitor the progression of the disease (which isunstopable) every 2 months.
The monetary cost of all the above will be huge and no single person, let alone someone with so many health problems and already burdened with large expenses for monitoring her health in past years, could bear it alone (divorced , mother of 2 children -1st year and 1st semester students- with a disability rate of 85 % ) .
The hospitalisation is being covered by EOPYY, albeit with long delays, but according to the legislation of Great Britain it must be prepaid prior to the patient's entrance. Because if it is not paid in advance, no monitoring, treatment, therapy or surgery can be performed, even if they are deemed urgent, something which has happened on previous medical visits to hospitals and doctors in Great Britain.
The travelabroad, accommodation and meals are partly covered, after the return to Greece, for herself and an escort who is absolutely necessary.
Not covered by anyone are thenecessary expenses which incur and concern professional interpreters, telephone contacts towards relevant services in Greece and there respectively, transportation costs for herselfand the necessary attendant as well as the cost of accommodation and food (which is only partially covered and ex post which requires it to partiallyexist in order to be reimbursed partly) .
To cover the above necessary medical costs, a solidarity concert was held on 13.10.13, where 13 bands fromthe local music scene and beyond participated pro bono, with the allotment of Block 33 in Thessaloniki, and incredible volunteer work where needed. An amount was raised which covered the costs of the 15 day trip on the17.11.2013 where all the above was diagnosed about the state of her health with1st being the imminent, urgent surgery, critical for the path of her life on 01.14.2014.
Contributing now financially and otherwise the fight of a person for life, whom the world around them recognisetheir contribution towards all directions, we help not only Rita and her children but also the society of Thessaloniki to keep one of its very special children.
