I've recently re-installed my PC and I've decided not to use Windows any more cause of all the viruses and problems etc. My question is - Can InfinityMU run on a Linux operating system (Ubuntu)? As far as I know Game Guard uses a windows driver to accomplish its task, but still I'm wondering if its possible and if someone knows a way.. :psychotic:

When I run the InfinityMU updater It downloads all files but after "Connect" nothing happends. Anyway my hopes are not high, I knew what I was getting myself into when installing Ubuntu. Still I'd like to hear if RESiSTANT or anyone else who worked on the server knows of a way to get through this.

Linux & Ubuntu ftl. :)

Maybe, get somekind of a emulator,or a Virtual PC,where you can play the game under XP,but you don't have to do anything fancy on it.

I do have a Win XP SP3 machine set up on VirtualBox (I use it for photoshop), but the 3D support is awful and I get a lot of lag, even when I dedicate 80% of my video memory into it. A way to run it directly on Ubuntu is what I'm looking for :) thx 4 the idea anyway

Install Wine (an emulator to run Win32 applications). I have done so once, and it worked fine.

Yeah I have Wine, that's how I'm able to run the Infinity updater, but that's about as far as I get with it. The game doesn't start. I'm guessing its cause of the game guard.

Could be, but you will have to troubleshoot it abit further. Is there no error message generated, no external browser being called?

I think you should just consider dual-booting, make a logical partition, and install XP there just for the games, and use the Debian as the primarily boot OS.

Nope, no error messages, no nothing. Just absolutely no reaction.

Yeah I've thought about dual-booting but what I'm aiming for is running it on this OS. Just the hassle of restarting my PC every time I wanna play turns me down. Thanks for the advice though, appreciated.

Well even if you do manage to work things out, I can assure you the gaming experience will not be what you expect. Potting will be an headache, as the game itself will probably have a log of lag, the 3D rendering will be crap, so if I were you I'd run it on a native system.

So simply put, it will not be worth the hassle and you will most likely end up installing the OS. I'll do some research, it could be much likely that it is the MuGuard that is the main problem here.

Yeah for sure the performance of the game would be much worse than when running it from Win. I don't mind that too much though. I mainly log in-game to talk with friends and help on CS, so it wouldn't be that big of a issue as long as I can login at all lol. Thank you for taking your time to research m8. If you do happen to find anything, I'll be here :)

By tomorrow, I'll try and gather and do some research on which components are required for MU to function, and hopefully a guide up with details on how to emulate, or install those components on *nix.

If not, I will install Ubuntu on my desktop, and I'll investigate it myself further.

Much appreciated m8! I can only hope that you come up with something, cause so far all the research I've done has led me nowhere. Thx again

Don't talk about something you clearly don't understand. You will only look foolish.
